Today's Well-Earned Rant

The person who needs to read this probably never will. But I needed to say it. -M

To whom it may concern,

Under the weather or not, the sheer audacity of your latest request/demand is unbelievable. I understand that this is a big deal for you and your family and that you want the house to look nice. I get that, I really do. But why is it our responsibility, in any degree, to make sure that your house is clean for the event? Short answer: It isn't.

Your family habitually messes up the entire house--not just the part that you live in, but your Mom's living space, too. You bring things upstairs to use or to work or to play with and never take them back downstairs. You leave your junk around to clutter up every available horizontal surface. You leave dirty dishes in your Mom's sink and opened, uneaten food on her table and countertops. You leave your dirty laundry in her living room. Essentially, you and your kids have no concept of the personal space and personal property of others, and you all run roughshod over your Mom's house because she's too tender-hearted to tell you to clean up after yourselves.

Now that events are forcing you to clean up your own messes, you want my family's help? Let's review what you and your family have done for us in our recent hours of need, shall we?

When we moved last summer and spent literally every waking moment for two days packing, moving, and cleaning, where were you? You were nowhere to be found. You and the kids were too busy with other activities to help family members in need. (In fairness, though, you did make us tasty pancakes at one o’clock in the morning, which was more help than I expected.)

When our basement flooded and we had to move every single thing that was in the basement into our garage on short notice, where were you? You were nowhere to be found; you were too busy with other things. I'm beginning to sense a trend here.

When we were cleaning and painting our basement after it was finally fixed, where were you? Again, and not at all unexpectedly, you were nowhere to be found. Your brother was good enough to come over and help, but you and your kids were too busy.

After all this, you have the unmitigated gall to tell me and my family just to drop everything on my day off and come clean your house?

Pound sand, lady.
